Virtual George Bush

Talking Out of the Side of His Mouth

Projects - Virtual George Bush

Renowned cartoonist Kevin "Kal" Kallaugher came to DDI with a caricature sculpture of George W. Bush’s head with the intention of making a virtual, interactive puppet.

DDI laser scanned and delivered a perfect 3D digital model of Bush to Kal so that his team at UMBC could move into the next phase and animate it.

With the help of UMBC's Imaging Research Center (IRC), Kal was able to use the data provided by DDI and create a system that makes the virtual Bush head move with the assistance of two human-controlled joysticks.

The Walters Art Museum featured a retrospective of Kal's work Mightier Than the Sword: The Satirical Pen of KAL, which included the Virtual George Bush on display. The show ran from June 18, 2006 through Sept. 3, 2006.
