Mattie’s Foundation has been formed in order to spread Mattie’s message of hope and peace by as many means as possible. Jeni Stepanek, Mattie’s Mom, and the other officers are committed to implementing that goal.

With the publication of Mattie’s last book, Just Peace: A Message of Hope, which he wrote in collaboration with President Jimmy Carter, we look forward to the great opportunity of both spreading the message presented there and stimulating activities which will give life to the message.

Among these activities will be programs in schools and colleges, particularly in Peace Studies courses. We plan competitions in schools, based on Mattie’s best-selling books of poetry, to develop programs which will contribute to hope and peace in schools, in families and in their communities.

Preliminary plans for a Mattie Stepanek Exhibit in the new Rockville Library, including a bust of Mattie, have been discussed with Mr. Dan Beavin, Agency Manager and Mrs. Diane Monnier, Senior Librarian for Children’s and Adult Services.

The Mayor and Council of the City of Rockville unanimously agreed to name the new park at King Farm the Mattie J. T. Stepanek Park. The Foundation, with the City Department of Recreation and Parks, is planning a bronze statue of Mattie with his service dog, Micah, seated at a chess table in the Park.

Jimilu Mason of Alexandria, VA, is the sculptor creating the statue of Mattie, which will be placed in the “Mattie’s Park” at King Farm in Rockville, MD.

On Wednesday, April 26, at 1PM, as a preliminary step in designing the sculpture, Jimilu will be photographing Darren Guest of Randallstown, MD, in his wheel chair, representing Mattie, next to an existing chess table in the Village Green of King Farm. Darren is 14 years old and is a cartoonist. He has been to Disneyland where he met a Disney animator who is now his mentor. Darren has congenital muscular dystrophy.

In the next step, Direct Dimensons of Owings Mills, MD, who does Laser Scanning, Reverse Engineering and Digital Modeling will facilitate the preparation of the sculpture. A sculptor previously had to enlarge their models by applying clay or plaster to a welded, built up armature. This new digital technique, provides them either with a full scale styrofoam armature or a full scale plaster which they then work with. Through a series of molds made from this enlargement, the foundry produces the full scale bronze. The plaster copy of this composition will be used in producing an edition of 9-in bronzes.

Direct Dimensions will also provide a 4-in Crystal cube within which the image of the statue will be replicated by 'controlled explosions' of converging lasers.

Jeni Stepanek will be on Larry King Live with President Carter on Wednesday at 9PM EST.
